Canada Winter Appeal: University Fund for Female Survivors of Domestic, Sexual & Physical Abuse in Iran November 27, 2018 by Azadeh Akbari This year for our Canada Winter Appeal we’ve set a goal to raise funds for the tertiary education of two outstanding survivors of domestic, sexual and physical abuse who are about to graduate from the OMID Program – Mojgan and Elaheh Breaking the cycle of abuse and strengthening the social, emotional and economic opportunities of disadvantaged young women in Iran means giving women and girls support beyond basics like food and shelter. Enabling independence, empowerment and self-reliance start with gifts like this one. With your help, we can enable the next generation of change makers by supporting them now. Below are the stories of the three young women at OMID we need your support for and a break down of what your donations will go towards. MOJGAN DAVARI Mojgan was a victim of honor-based violence and abuse as a teenager. She was taken out of school when she was 17 and imprisoned at home when her parents found out that she had a boyfriend and was no longer a virgin. She was chained to a radiator during the day when no one else was in the house and locked in her room at all other times. After 8 months she managed to escape through a window or her second-floor bedroom using her bed sheets as a rope. She slept in a park for two weeks when the police picked her up and referred her to OMID. Under threat of legal proceedings, her parents agreed for Mojgan to enroll at OMID and move in with her grandmother. She graduated from high school while at OMID. Mojgan’s technical abilities and talent for technology are remarkable. She will graduate in 2019 and plans to study Electrical Engineering at Azad University – Central Branch, a four-year Bachelors program. Please help Mojgan continue to flourish and channel her talent and passion in technical and STEM field by donating to fund the costs of studying at university. Costs: CAD$300/term x 8 terms (fees), CAD$65/term x 8 terms (educational supplies) = CAD$2,920 ELAHEH IZADI Ehaheh was a victim of child sexual abuse at the hands of her uncle when she was 15. Ehaheh told her mother about being abused by her uncle but her mother did not believe her at first. However, eventually, her mother came to believe her and decided that it would be best for Elaheh to move of the house. Elaheh moved to Tehran to live with her mother’s sister. Her aunt enrolled her immediately at OMID. At OMID Elaheh is now doing exceptionally well and is a high academic achiever. She will graduate from the OMID Program in 2019 and intends to study Social Work at Azad University – Central Branch, a four year Bachelor program. Despite her traumatic past and surviving sexual abuse at a young age, Elaheh is onto a new chapter of hope and has set herself big goals to continue her in her path of empowerment and helping others. She hopes to further her education by going to university and embark on a career in social work. However, Elaheh is unable to continue to flourish academically without your support. Please help Elaheh follow her dreams by donating to fund her costs to study at university. Costs: CAD$275/term x 8 terms (fees), CAD$65/term x 8 terms (educational supplies) = CAD$2,720. Total Campaign Goal: CAD$5,640 DONATE TO SUPPORT MOJGAN & ELAHEH Donations made to OMID Foundation Canada are tax deductible in accordance with current laws for Canadian tax payers.
