Life Skills and Gender Awareness Programs

OMID’s life skills and gender awareness department is committed to researching and implementing programs that will encourage positive outcomes for this underserved population. Being gender-responsive means creating an environment through facilitator selection, program development, content preparation, and material production that reflects an understanding of the realities of the lived experiences of marginalized young women from the Persian-speaking world.

Reproductive rights & health:

Issues covered in the workshops included reproductive rights, laws, abstinence, body image, contraception, gender, human development, human reproduction, pregnancy, and prevention. The beneficiaries increase their self-awareness through these workshops and gain access to reproductive health resources as needed.

Civil society & civic participation:

Issues covered in the workshops included human/individual/-gender rights, civil society, community involvement, gender-based violence/discrimination, democratic political processes, and organizational capacity. The workshops cultivated a sense of agency among the beneficiaries and fostered positive change within their communities.

GLOBAL GLOW:

The Global G.L.O.W. program integrates out-of-school safe spaces and dynamic group mentorship with innovative, girl-centered curricula to equip women in vulnerable communities with the essential skills and resources for their well-being. This program is developed based on insights gathered from girls in out-of-school clubs and summits, enabling the organization to create new programs and enhance existing ones to address the needs of today’s girls and tomorrow’s women leaders. The curriculum focuses on building the skills and knowledge of adolescent girls, covering modules that teach self-expression, sexual and reproductive health, decision-making, and more. By cultivating these competencies in a safe and supportive online small group setting, club members learn to advocate for themselves and the issues they care about, empowering them to lead lives of their own.

PATHS:

The PATHS program focuses on teaching students Social Emotional Learning (SEL), emphasizing the development of healthy identities, emotional management, empathy, relationship management, and responsible decision-making. It aims to create trusting and collaborative learning environments through partnerships with schools, families, and communities. The program covers the core competencies outlined by the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning and is designed to guide students through these developmental domains. Additionally, it includes supplemental activities for parents and children to reinforce critical skills at home. SEL is recognized as a crucial component of the educational experience, leading to improved student behavior, reduced classroom disruptions, and more outstanding academic achievement by going beyond traditional academic skills and teaching students how to resolve conflicts, handle emotions, empathize, and make responsible decisions.
