EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH: MAHDI ZOLFAGHAR February 22, 2019 by Azadeh Akbari Mahdi Zolfaghar is Head of Public Relations at OMID in Iran. He is the driving force behind OMID’s internal and external relations, communication and events in Tehran, and has been in this role since November 2017. Prior to this, Mahdi worked at the OMID center in Tehran for three years as a volunteer and was introduced to OMID through his partner Fatemeh Eslami, who is the Head of Social Work Department at OMID. Currently, alongside being in charge of Public Relations, Mahdi has created an employee engagement initiative, to increase the employee’s job satisfaction and improve the workspace. Speaking of his experience of working at OMID, Mahdi says: “Working at OMID is not just a job for me. It is a big part of my life. I am delighted to be working at OMID to fulfill our mission in empowering and improving the lives of disadvantaged women and girls who have endured abuse and trauma. In my heart, I am truly happy to have this opportunity to work alongside OMID on this important mission. The work that OMID does, is not the same as treating physically visible wounds. The results are not immediate and healing takes time. However, the OMID Program and the staff’s continued training scheme ensures that we use the most effective ways to create grassroots change in our society and truly help individuals overcome their traumas and become self-reliant in the long run. Communicating the work of OMID to the general public is challenging because most people have little or no knowledge about the impact of psychological trauma, and the nuanced nature of OMID’s approach to empowering the young women in its care to overcome the traumas of their past is not easy to explain. Educating the public about complex trauma will always be one of the important ways that we can help create positive change in our society.”In my opinion, OMID is a small window to a better future for the young women of this country and it is my honor to be a small member of this wonderful family.
