EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH: MARYAM HERAVI April 30, 2019 by Azadeh Akbari Maryam Heravi, is the Head of Administration, at OMID in Tehran. She has been working at OMID for fourteen years. We sat down with Maryam to find out more about her work at OMID and here is what she had to say: Thanks for taking the time to talk to us today. Congrats on being chosen as this month’s OMID Employee of the Month! Can you tell us more about your role at OMID? Thank you! I actually first joined OMID as a librarian and occasionally helped out with some administrative tasks. As the foundation grew, I was offered to join the administrative team which eventually led to my current role as head of the administrative department. In this role, I oversee the day-to-day operations of administration, purchasing, and supplies, security and building maintenance units. What is your favorite memory at OMID? I have many memories from the past fourteen years and I enjoy keeping in touch with OMID girls as I still have contact with girls who graduated from the OMID Program many years ago, have migrated to other countries or have gotten married. I see OMID as a family, and in these years I have been witnessing the growth of our family. Many have come, many have left, and the most beautiful part of this experience has been seeing the girls finishing their course, graduating, and becoming independent individuals. It is also worth mentioning that some of the girls start working alongside the rest of us at OMID and become our colleagues, as we at OMID also recruit some of the girls to become part of our team. What’s it been like working with a charity such as OMID all these years? Working here has enabled me to truly become an empowered woman myself. My own life story is very similar to the girls OMID supports. I have never hidden this truth and in fact, learned to own my story and feel proud to have come changed my fate. When I saw the girls at OMID fighting such extreme battles, yet determined to make a change to improve their lives, it gave me hope. I told myself that I too can improve my circumstances. I realized that given the right opportunity for growth, everyone can make changes and thrive in life. All it takes is creating the right environment to allow them to blossom. Thank you for your time, thoughts and sharing your experiences with us. Do you have any final comments or a message you want to send to our readers? My message is that we should not assume that those who are in a situation of deprivation or are in difficult circumstances can not grow, or that they have low intelligence. Change is possible for every human being including those who have not had the privilege of having access to resources to thrive. OMID makes this possible. By supporting OMID in whatever means possible, you are helping us create opportunities for our society’s most vulnerable and marginalized to succeed and flourish, all in their own unique way as individuals.
