OMID Girls climb to the peak of Mount Damavand October 5, 2015 by Kim A few months ago, 10 OMID girls that chose to be a part of a mountaineering club climbed their way to 5,610 meters, the peak of Mount Damavand. The climb took about two days to complete and took place on a suspected active volcano which is also the highest peak in Iran and the Middle East. Watch the above video about their big climb to find out how this experience empowered them. The mountaineering club came to existence in 2013 as part of promoting sportsmanship and connecting with nature, its beauty and power in order to symbolize and promote the girl’s inner strength. It originally started with over 40 girls who went to initial trainings under the supervision of Ms. Maryam Zandi and her group from Golkooh Mountaineering Club. A year later after ongoing climbs to local mountains such as Tochal in north of Tehran, 28 of them were deemed physically fit to climb to higher altitudes and started more intense trainings. About six months ago, 13 of the 28 were chosen based on their strength and fitness to train for Mount Damavand. Upon successfully climbing Damavand, the climbers will be granted an official Level 1 Mountain Climbing certification by the IRMSCF (Iran Mountain Climbing Federation). Here are some comments from the young women who took part in this big climb: Maryam: “I never thought I would be climbing one of the highest mountains in the world. Now that I’ve done this, working to fulfill my dreams seems easier!” Afsaneh: “This climb was a dream come true for me. I wish to thank everyone who helped me and my friends get here!” Salimeh: “Overcoming the challenging climb made me believe in my strength!” Mr. Sirayee: “Climbing with the girls of OMID has been truly the most amazing climb I have ever experienced in my life. The drive, will power and the teamwork of these girls is what has made this the best experience. Each and every one of them are now ready to become professional mountain guides themselves!” A special thanks to Ms. Maryam Zandi, OMID Mountaineering Team coach and member of the Golkooh Mountaineering Team, Mr. Mohammad Nassiri, Head of IRMSCF’s Himalayan climbs, Ms. Mina Ghorbani and Ms. Nastaran Goudarzi, members of Iran’s Youth Mountaineering Team, Mr. Mehdi Abdollahzadeh, CEO of Nahayatgar Co. Ltd, and Mr. Beitollah Sirayee who has conquered Damavand more than 250 times in his career as a professional mountain climber and mountain guide.
