Introduction
Suicide is one of the most urgent yet overlooked public health crises today. While global conversations often focus on statistics, behind every number lies the lived experience of women and girls whose pain is compounded by gender-based violence, discrimination, and social inequality. For many, these systemic injustices create unbearable cycles of trauma and despair that lead to depression, suicidal ideation, and, tragically, suicide.
The Global Suicide Crisis Among Women and Girls
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), over 720,000 people die by suicide each year. Men account for more deaths, but women are disproportionately affected by suicide attempts and suicidal thoughts. In 2021, suicide was the third leading cause of death for individuals aged 15–29, with young women carrying a heavier burden in this age group.
Behind these statistics are stories of women who:
– Are forced into marriages they did not choose.
– Are silenced when they seek help.
– Are trapped in abusive cycles with no safe exit.
These realities not only strip women of freedom but also deeply affect their mental health, leaving them vulnerable to trauma and despair.
Why Women and Girls Are at Greater Risk
The epidemic of suicide amongst women is not just a mental health issue — it is a gender equality issue.
– Gender-based violence increases the risk of long-term trauma.
– Social discrimination limits access to education, resources, and healing.
– Cultural norms undervalue women’s lives and silence their struggles.
Until these root causes are addressed, suicide among women and girls will continue to rise.
